Hon'ble The Chief Justice Dr. Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi

Hon'ble The Chief Justice Dr. Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi was born on July 20, 1962 in village Pantikhari Sasan near Odagaon (the Second Srikhetra, Raghunath Jew Temple), in the district of Nayagarh in a respectable “Sarangi Family” as the youngest son of Late Banchhanidhi Sarangi, Ex-Financial Advisor belonging to Senior Class-I Officer of Orissa Finance Service Cadre of State of Odisha, and Late Sailabala Sarangi, a doting house-wife.
Married to Mrs. Nirupama Sarangi, an out and out housewife turned as an advocate of the Orissa High Court, whose ungrudging moral, mental and physical support allowed him to have a smooth sailing in professional life.
Blessed with two daughters; Dr. Debarchita, Associate Professor in Prosthodontics in the Institute of Dental Science, SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar and recipient of “Bharat Jyoti Award” for outstanding service, achievement and contribution from Indian International Friendship Society, New Delhi; and Debasmita, passed LL.B. (Hons.) with gold medal from M.S. Law College, Cuttack and LL.M. with gold medal from P.G. Department of Law, after completion of Post Graduation in Applied Economics under Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar being topper in the State in +2 Arts CHSE Exam, 2012 and recipient of “Bidya Bharati Samman, 2012” of Bharat Prativa Samman from Jaya Bharat Trust.
Dr. Justice Sarangi passed H.S.C. Examination and studied in Commerce with Hons. from B.J.B. College, Bhubaneswar. Acquired LL.B. & LL.M. from M.S. Law College, Cuttack under Utkal University, Vanivihar, Bhubaneswar. Awarded Ph. D in Law from Sambalpur University. Recipient of various prizes and awards for academic achievements.
Joined the Bar in December, 1985 having regular practice in the High Court of Orissa, Cuttack and Supreme Court of India, New Delhi and also a life member of Orissa High Court Bar Association, Civil Court Bar Association, Criminal Court Bar Association and Central Tribunal Bar Association, etc.
Most significant career move as a lawyer began with systematic and meticulous training in almost all the branches of law in the chamber of esteemed Late Gangadhar Rath, Former Senior Advocate-cum-Advocate General of Odisha, a jurist, a scholar of high repute and was a great constitutional lawyer. He acquired all steadiness, accuracy and clarity of thinking from his senior.
Has conducted cases specially in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking, telephone, elections etc. He was an advocate, first and last, who fought all cases, big or small with equal zeal and vigour. In course of his meteoric professional career, he occupied an unique position. Endowed with integrity, honesty, sincerity, ability, hardworking, prompt and meticulous reading with a powerful mind, deep thinking and clear expression coupled with an understanding of human nature, he lost no time in building of solid legal practice.
Has appeared for the Private Parties, Corporations, Government Undertakings, Banks, Insurance Companies, Managing Committees of Schools, Governing Bodies of Colleges, Lokpal of Odisha, Human Right Commission, Land Acquisition Officer, National Highway Authority, etc. independently before various Courts, Tribunals, High Court and Supreme Court. Appointed as Arbitrator, Advocate Commission and Amicus Curiae to assist the Court in many important matters.
For outstanding performance and high standard of professional ethics as a lawyer, conferred the "Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award" with Gold Medal for the year 2002 from the then Hon'ble Justice P.K. Balsubramanyam, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court. He completed a long 27 years of practice at the Bar.
Actively participated with various philanthropic, social and religious organizations. Participated in various symposiums, seminars of State, National and International level with special reference to public administration, habitat management, law and social change.
He was elevated to the Bench and sworn in as a Permanent Judge of Orissa High Court on June 20, 2013. His Lordship was appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Jharkhand on dated 03.07.2024 and took oath on 05.07.2024.
Superannuated on 19th July, 2024.
